Abstract
Background: Chronic stress is increasingly recognized as a significant contributor to cardiovascular disease (CVD), one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally. This review explores the mechanisms linking chronic stress to CVD, focusing on the physiological and behavioral pathways involved. The review also examines recent evidence on interventions aimed at mitigating the effects of stress on cardiovascular health.
Methods: A comprehensive review of literature published from 2010 to 2023 was conducted. Studies investigating the impact of chronic stress on cardiovascular health and the effectiveness of stress-reduction interventions were analyzed. Particular emphasis was placed on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, inflammation, and lifestyle behaviors as mediators of this relationship.
Results: Chronic stress was found to exacerbate cardiovascular risk through dysregulation of the HPA axis, increased systemic inflammation, and unhealthy behaviors such as poor diet, physical inactivity, and smoking. Interventions targeting stress reduction, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), and physical activity, showed promise in mitigating these effects and improving cardiovascular outcomes.
Conclusion: Chronic stress significantly contributes to the development and progression of CVD through physiological and behavioral pathways. Effective management of stress through evidence-based interventions is essential for reducing cardiovascular risk and improving overall health outcomes. Public health initiatives should prioritize stress reduction as a key component of CVD prevention strategies.
